Presidentâs Letter

2009 Baseball Season

ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ Welcome to the 2009 Baseball Season!!

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball.  I'll tell you what I do.  I stare out the window and wait for spring.  ~Rogers Hornsby

Fresh cut grass, warm lazy days, sunshine, the smell of a new glove and the sound of the crack of a bat (now a days, a ping).Ê As spring looms closer and the trees begin to grow leaves, I canât help but thinking that baseball season is near.Ê To this day, I still think about growing up and playing catch with my dad in our yard or putting on that seasonâs team uniform, whether I was on the Orioles, Dodgers or Tigers.Ê It did not matter; I was going to the baseball field to play a game with friends while my mom and dad cheered me on.Ê There was a newly chalked infield, the dirt freshly raked, the umpires barking out balls and strikes and learning sportsmanship.Ê Those are my memories of baseball when I was a kid.Ê

Another year is upon us and it is time to come out from hibernation and get out on the ball fields. LTRC Baseball is committed to providing a fun and safe environment for our kids to learn the skills of baseball and creating memories like the ones I shared with you.Ê

I am fortunate enough to be the president of this organization, serving with the most giving and unselfish volunteers in Lutherville.Ê The baseball board is comprised of approximately seventeen volunteers who work year round to prepare for these next few months.Ê Our board is one-hundred percent volunteer and each and every one of them loves the game of baseball and is giving back to the community. An example of this dedication and sense of giving is the fact that half of the members no longer have children in the program, not because they have quit baseball, but because they are grown adults.Ê I can think of no better people with whom to surround one self.Ê

I would like to thank all of you volunteers who make this program the best in Baltimore County.Ê Whether you are managing a team, helping coach, hitting infield, driving a carpool, or sitting in the sun keeping score, you make this program a success. ÊÊYou are the ones that bring that sense of community to our most precious commodity; our children.Ê

I was a scholarship player at a Division I school.Ê I have won awards and have had my fair share of success.Ê But, the things I remember the most and the best memories I have while playing baseball are those mentioned in the first paragraph of this letter.Ê I did not care about any trophies (though they were pretty nice to get), I cared about me and dad or me and mom going to have a catch or driving me to ANOTHER game.Ê They did so without ever complaining. ÊRemember to show our kids the proper way to play baseball, how to love and respect the game and conveying sportsmanship to our children.Ê Baseball is a unique sport where there is time to talk to the players and show them how to be good sports.Ê Be positive toward all of our players, coaches and umpires. Tell them how much you appreciate them spending time with your kids and helping them become better baseball players and people.Ê

I love this game!!
