BAD WEATHER INSTRUCTIONS

In case the weather is threatening on a day when you have a game, there are several things you should know. The decision to play or not is handled in two phases.

PHASE 1- There is a field leader at each playing location and this person will make a judgment in the afternoon regarding the playing condition of the fields. Keep in mind that this will be a decision about the condition of the fields at that time and not about the then current weather or the predicted weather. He will call the managers only if the fields are not playable and the managers will notify their teams only if the game is not to be played.

PHASE 2- If the field leader considers the fields playable, then everyone should report for the game. At the normal starting time of the game, the decision as to whether the game will be played transfers from the field leader to the umpire in charge. From that point on, it is the umpire who will make a judgment about the weather and the field conditions to determine if the game should be played.

Key Points to Remember

  • The field leader can only call off games, he does not have the authority to say the game will be played.
  • Always assume the game is on unless you hear from your child’s manager.
  • If another team’s game is called off, it does not mean that your game is also. Often certain fields are playable while others are not.
  • It is the umpire that has the final say about whether the game will be played even if the field leader says the fields are playable.
  • If there is a sign of bad weather or if the fields have been rained on, do not drop your child off and leave. At least stay until the game begins. Remember the umpire can still declare the fields unplayable and call off the game. We don’t want kids stranded in this situation.
